The City
The city of Torrevieja lies about 50 km south west of Alicante. You can reach Torrevieja via the road N 332. It get's its name from an old tower (old=vieja ; tower=torre)

Salt lakes
Surrounded by two large and beautiful natural salt-water lagoons, the Lagunas de La Mata and Torrevieja, which occupy more than half the municipal district. The are is declared a natural reserve, and they are considered Europe's largest salt-producing lakes.
It is also said to be good for sufferers of arthritis, asthma and rheumatism and the area is regarded by the World Health Organisation as having the healthiest climate in Europe.
Apart of the salt industry, tourism and fishing keep the city alive. The harbour is surrounded by many Torrevieja hotels, gives home to 300 fishing ships and over 1000 private sport boats.
